Amanda Brugel

(February 27 2010 - Toronto ON) Pointe Claire is a sleepy community on that part of the island of Montreal called"the West Island. It is the West Island, to those not familiar with it, is a vast area that extends from Lachine until the west. Amanda Brugel's birthplace is frequently mentioned, but her brief time in the city wasn't. Brugel grew to be a woman of a certain age in Courtice Ontario, outside Oshawa. She initially wanted to pursue a career as an actress however, after a rapid growth spurt her partners were no longer able to dance with her. In an interview with the Toronto Star, she confessed that "In heels, I'm 6 feet, 1 inch." Once I surpassed my male counterparts, I stopped. A lot of former dancers go on to act. For Brugel it was the guidance from her drama teacher at her high school which pushed her in the direction she required. The teacher suggested she try to get a role for school's annual play. She was able to audition and be cast as Anne of Green Gables. She was given an Fine Arts Talent Scholarship to take part in York University's Theater Program and graduated from the program in 2000, earning a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts. Her career spans 20 years and she has been in over 60 productions including big screen productions and smaller ones. The most well-known role she played was that of Rita (pictured beneath) in the television show The Handmaid's Tale. Brugel is the only Canadian actor on the show in Season 1 and was only seen occasionally.
